1. Confirm eligibility
o Be at least the required age and have no disqualifying felony convictions. Registering requires valid government photo ID.
2. Register with the NJ State Police (get a SORA Application ID)
o Create an account and register through the NJSP SORA portal (eApps). You’ll receive an Application ID that you need for training and fingerprinting. There’s a state registration fee. NJSP eApps+1
3. Schedule fingerprinting (background check)
o After registering, make an appointment with IdentoGo (MorphoTrust) for NJ fingerprints/background check — this is mandatory. Many training providers recommend scheduling this soon after registration.
4. Complete required SORA initial training
o Take a state-approved Initial SORA course (unarmed SORA is required first). For “armed” status you must also complete the approved firearms/armed upgrade instruction from an authorized provider. (Training providers and class lengths vary.)
5. Obtain necessary firearms permits
o Important: The Armed SORA certification does not by itself authorize you to carry a firearm on duty. You must separately obtain whatever NJ firearm carry/permit is required to legally carry while working armed (follow NJSP/NJ firearms guidance). NJ.gov+1
6. Submit application / pay fees
o After training and fingerprinting, submit required documentation and pay applicable fees (state registration, card issuance, any training fees) per NJSP instructions. Use your SORA Application ID on all forms. NJSP eApps+1
7. Receive your SORA card / armed certification
o Once approved, you’ll receive the SORA certification/card indicating armed status (keep proof of training and your carry permit with you while working). NJ.gov
8. Maintain and renew
o Armed SORA typically requires annual renewal and an annual block of refresher instruction (e.g., an 8-hour annual armed refresher) plus keeping fingerprint/background records current. Check renewal deadlines and complete yearly weapons/refresher requirements.
